Summary of application potential of future artificial cells

Application potential of future artificial cells can be summarized as follows:
  • Artificial cell subsystems (e.g., PNA - vesicle aggregates) could potentially develop into drug delivery units
  • Oil droplets in motion induced by chemotaxis are precursors of a type of movable protocells and could be used as biochemical sensors to sense changes in environment.
  • Real time evolution of future cells could be monitored and controlled within the microfluidic technology developed in PACE
  • Towards living technology: self-replication, self-repair, adaptation, autonomy, robustness and local intelligence
