Amphiphile phases in Widom model

PNG file of gradient phases in Widom model

The nine images show examples of two dimensional phase behavior in the Widom spin-lattice amphiphile model: blue is hydrophilic (water), black is hydrophobic (oil) and all interfaces (black-blue) are assumed to be coated with amphiphile.

Horizontal and vertical spatial gradients are used, mostly in the two chemical potential parameters z1 and z2, corresponding to the water-oil and amphiphile vs oil-water biases. These parameters have minimum values in the center of the images. Temperatures shown are in units of kT. The images demonstrate the rich phase diversity of the model. The final image is for a random combinatorial amphiphile background giving rise to spatially varying sets of local parameters.
