9. Applications: synthesis, delivery, biodocking

This work package is concerned with the applications of the lablets to three classes of problems: (i) synthesis – i.e. use of the lablet pair as a micro-reactor to carry out chemical transformations, (ii) delivery – i.e. use of the lablets for controlled release of a pre-synthesized substance at a defined rate and quantity, and (iii) docking – i.e. controlled attachment or adhesion between the lablets and other objects, typically of biological origin (e.g. cells).

In the context of non-traditional computing, the above three types of operations can be thought of as a minimal alphabet (or “instruction set”) from which more complex operations and “algorithms” (e.g., chemical or biochemical reaction networks) can be composed. The successful demonstration of the lablet functionality in specific application areas belonging to the above-mentioned three types, as well as the exploration and identification of any limits of the lablet concept and design parameters, will be the main aims of the present work package. The lablet technology will also be used to enable and explore the potential of Evolutionary Design of Experiments (WP10) for functional optimization, as applied to one or more of the following application areas.
