1. Chemical sensor integration

The high-level aim of WP1 is the post-processing integration of chemical sensors into the lablets to detect and signal external changes in pH, ion concentration and chemical composition.  A versatile multi-purpose surface coating will allow the self-assembly of a range of nanoparticles (NP) decorated with designer receptors onto the device through binding to an intermediate, with subsequent metabolite binding eliciting a change in NP optoelectronic properties. Device surfaces and NPs will be decorated with independent linker modules, and the NPs self-assembled to the surface by introduction of a binary intermediate.  The affinity of the intermediate for the surface will be engineered to remain strong and constant, while the binding of the NPs to the intermediate can be fine-tuned through judicious modification of noncovalent interactions. Bistability will be introduced through redox-reversible moieties, allowing for complex switchable arrays of sensory units.
